SBAA Artwork Wiring Guide
(For SBAA application process, exhibitions, Gallery 113)
To ensure that all artwork can be safely and consistently hung, please prepare your pieces using the following standard wiring method. Artwork that does not meet these requirements may not be accepted at ingathering.
Before you start wiring your artwork, please watch this short video. It covers the essential steps clearly and shows exactly what proper hardware and placement should look like. Following these guidelines will make your piece exhibition-ready and help our volunteers hang the show smoothly.
1. Use D-Ring or Strap Hangers — NOT Sawtooth Hangers
- Install two D-rings (or strap hangers) on the back of the frame or panel.
- Place them roughly 1/4 of the way down from the top edge of the artwork.
- Sawtooth hangers are not allowed because they are unstable on gallery hanging systems.
2. Use Coated Picture Wire Only
- Choose plastic-coated, braided picture wire appropriate to the weight of your artwork.
- Do not use fishing line, string, rope, floral wire, or anything improvised.
3. Thread and Secure the Wire Properly
- Pass the wire through each D-ring.
- Pull it taut but not rigid—a little give is ideal.
- Twist and wrap the loose end neatly around the main wire at least 5–6 times to secure it.
4. Wire Height: The “Tension Rule”
When you pull the center of the wire upward with one finger:
- The highest point of the wire should be at least 1 inch below the top of the frame,
- and the wire should not extend above the frame when pulled tight.
This ensures the hanging hardware does not show once installed.

5. Consider Weight and Reinforcement
- Heavy work (especially framed glass pieces) must use heavy-duty hangers and wire.
- For pieces over 20 lbs, add additional reinforcement or consult a professional framer.
6. Backing & Surface Requirements
- All 2D artwork must have a closed, clean back: paper backing, wood panel, or clean finished surface.
- No loose hardware, protruding screws, or sharp edges.
7. 3D / Sculptural Work
- Must include a stable hanging system or pedestal-ready base.
- If the piece requires special hardware, please provide it at ingathering.
8. Clean, Dry, Finished Artwork Only
- No wet paint.
- No loose charcoal, pastel, or debris.
- Frames must be clean and secure.
Thank you!
Proper wiring helps our volunteers hang your work safely and efficiently, and ensures a professional presentation for all SBAA exhibitions.
